BIOGRAPHY DJ ANTI (Spiral Trax Label Group / ACDC)

DJ Anti is the man behind the Spiral Trax Label Group (with the labels ACDC, Spiral Trax and Spiral Trax International) and one of Scandinavia's most respected DJ.

His DJ career started in 1990 after visiting London and its' burgeoning warehouse party scene during "the summer of love". He brought back, not only a love for dance music but also a determination to create something similar in his hometown. Being a dedicated record collector since his punk days he soon started to gather an impressive collection of dance singles and was in no time gracing the decks at most happening club nights in Gothenburg. Anti began spinning mostly acid house and obscure US techno then gradually moved on to hardcore, jungle, bleep and acid, (anything that rocked the then vibrant Swedish rave scene) before settling down for progressive house and German trance in the early nineties.

For a couple of years, he was involved in promoting the most prolific parties on the Swedish west coast that became loved by the ravers but hated by the police. However this was something he gave up when he opened Gothenburg's first specialised dance music record store in 1993. Consequently, his international DJ-ing career took off.

In the mid-nineties many dance devotees came back from trips to India and Thailand and the Swedish scene took another inspired turn. Psychedelic trance became the biggest movement in dance music in Sweden. DJ Anti and his record shop, Spiral Trax, are considered to have played a key role in breaking the Goa sound. In its heyday the shop would sell hundreds of self imported copies of certain titles, impressive numbers for an underground shop on the West coast of Sweden. It took some time, but eventually the big distributors caught up and soon certain compilations were selling over 10 000 copies in Scandinavia only. As a natural progression, he decided to open up a record label focusing solely on Scandinavian music and Spiral Trax as a label was born in 1997. After a couple of years and a number of releases, the "Swedish connection" had expanded. Thus, it was appropriate to provide artists from outside of Scandinavia the chance to release on the label. As a result, Spiral Trax International came to life in 1999. At the same time, the trance scene was very turbulent with a lot of DJ's searching for inspiration in other styles of music, like house, techno and drum & bass. The term "progressive trance" was being widely used to describe what was being played at the time. Since progressive trance and many Scandinavian artists were being mentioned in the same sentence, Acid Casualties was created to cater for that sound.

The same year Anti compiled the hugely successful "A progress in trance" compilation for Transient Records; a milestone in trance history that has had a great importance in making the Scandinavian trance sound popular all over the world. In no time, Anti was getting requests to play from all over the globe. Eventually, he could no longer combine this with running the record shop and therefore saw no other solution than to let it go. The label became one of the most respected and cutting edge in the scene. Artists that released their debut albums with Spiral Trax, soon saw themselves becoming part of the global trance elite. Atmos, Noma, Vibrasphere, Human Blue, S-Range and Logic Bomb all had their breakthrough on the label.

On the production side Anti has been making tracks with artists like Miranda, Human Blue and Atmos in the early days. Moreover, in 1998 he was involved in a remix for a Swedish folk music group that climbed the Swedish dance chart. However, this is something that Anti has not found enough time to do for the last few years since the labels require too much of his time. During the first couple of years of the new millennium, Anti was a frequent guest at the biggest trance festivals as well as clubs all over the world, frequently jetting from one continent to another.

As the music industry crisis was just starting along with the growing disappointment with the direction the psychedelic trance scene was taking Anti saw no other option than to cut down on his gigs and try to re-invent both his DJ-ing and the company in order to stay alive. Being extremely tired of the formulaic squeaky trance and its high BPM’s, the most obvious step was to go back to the roots. Since the progressive house of the early nineties with labels like Guerrilla and Limbo always had a huge impact on the Swedish sound Anti felt instantly connected to the new wave of progressive house that was sweeping the world with John Digweed’s Bedrock at the forefront. Therefore, to keep evolving, Anti expanded into the club scene with his new label, ACDC, focusing on progressive and tribal house releases. Only a few releases down the line, the label had already gained respect from the biggest DJs in the world such as John Digweed, Sander Kleinenberg, Seb Fontaine, Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Hernan Cattaneo, DJ Tomcraft and Paul Oakenfold just to name a few. ACDC became in no time the Scandinavian progressive house label as well as a label that is closely watched by key players in the industry. Since the market has stabilized and the label group have numerous killer releases in the pipeline, Anti is now DJ-ing more frequently again. He feels that he has found his love for music again, swapping the crusty dancefloors to proper clubs.

Recently Anti had a mix CD solely compiled from present and future ACDC releases featured on the cover of Greek magazine, “Freeze” and the Portuguese magazine, “Dance Club”. DJ-ing in the Mediterranean countries is a favourite of his, the connection with Greece being the strongest due to his Greek girlfriend.
