Quanto ás implicações morais.

 

Não me façam rir,

 

Alguém se queixa das implicações morais de construir uma AK-47, para matar seres humanos?

E as implicações morais de um míssil tomahawk? Ou se uma "bomba suja", ou de uma bala?

 

Curiosamente os gajos a comentar que estão muito chocados com esta novidade, por substituir o papel de Deus (?) , têm todos (infelizmente) nomes latinos, a Alejandra Garcia e o Carlos Manuel.. dass

Não consigo é encontrar correlacção entre as invençoes que deste, e uma desta magnitude.

Eu não sou contra atenção, mas realmente aqui temos a certeza de que -não sabemos- literalmente o que vai sair dali, blind experiments. E isto nao me escandaliza de modo algum, no entanto deixa-me a pensar.Ainda estou a digerir um pouco a ideia e assimilar.Mais tarde irei colocar aqui as minhas reflexões.

I agree with John Tan. We are already creating life. I am also not pleased with those who must insert their faith into this discussion, thereby showing the rest of us your fear and doubt. (If you were true believers there would be no reason to mention it.) Soon we will be able to insert nano-machines into our bodies and minds. I am hopeful that the religious fundamentalists will choose not to have these upgrades so that they can visit their magic place in the sky more rapidly.

Would all of you PLEASE stop looking at this with religious values?

We CAN create life. It IS possible, and will come in time. The only thing stopping it will be ethical laws. We will reach an understanding of how to construct molecules to create certain features in the organism we wish to make.

He has patents because he is living in the current world. He will, or someone else will. Its that simple. Moral standards will change and conform to the cultural and technological standards of the time. Even mentioning "God" shows ignorance to science.

This honestly blew my mind apart. I for one could not believe that we have the capabilities to create such complex molecules, let alone create them for specific uses, when I heard it in the presentation. I had to replay that a few times to let it sink in. The possibilities are endless, life has transcended into a new dimension. With our imaginations being the limit to the benefits of this technology it will have a profound impact indeed. The theory is sound, the science is proven, all that is left is fine tuning it to suit our needs and solve our problems. Bravo indeed!

Fabulous and inevitable! Only by standing on a precipice can mankind truly reach beyond the shackles of living for the day and progress towards a more promising tommorow. While it is understandable that many would recoil at the notion of quantifying what it is to be alive, people like Craig Venter should be lauded as being both heroic and visionary. We can all learn something from what Al Gore had to say this week. Unless we become self reliant for our energy requirements, we will never again be an independent democratic nation.

 

We can start with a fundamental change in our driving habits that is now required.

 

The Automobile Industry is going to be in the same position as the Airline Industry in the next few months. Unless we get away from gas combustion vehicles, including Hybrids, the automobile industry (as we know it) will die.We need to make drastic moves. America needs to move to ELECTRIC. The vehicles are not as fast, not always as fun to drive, but the move will save Americans money (Billions) and help bring change to our automotive companies. Let's "Be Green"!!!!!!!!!!!! BG Automotive Group Ltd. has a car that will travel 80-100 miles per charge for $15,995. Finally a car that most Americans can afford. Did you know that 80% of all drivers, drive less than 50 miles per day? This new car will cost an equivalent of $0.20-0.25 cents/gallon (depending on electricity rates in your area). Why send $700 Billion per year to OPEC (now buying up U.S. companies) when we can use this money for our schools, health care, social security for all Americans, etc, etc, etc. We can make the difference if WE change.

I find this technology fascinating and frightening. The unfortunate truth of the human race is that we have throughout history distorted good discoveries and inventions for use in warfare and destruction of cultures, environment and other human beings. I believe that it is important that we dele into understanding how we can manipulate our environment to help us survive, however are we truly able to handle the responsibility. History has shown that each time our understanding of technology, our abilities and surroundings a group came to power that exploited these new technologies for awful purposes.

 

Craig says that the majority of humans are unwilling or incapable of using this technology for evil purposes. I find this statement quite naive and I think it is hard to believe that a bright individual like Craig can actually believe this given the evidence of our past and current wars and troubles.

 

I am an optimist and a realist. Despite the fact that most human beings are capable of incredible good, many are often unwittingly drawn into following the wrong leaders or are overwhelmed enough not to fight against the current regime. This is what frightens me most about our new discoveries into recreating the very cells that make up our environment.

 

In world war one, biological and chemistry science was used to create mustard gas as a weapon. In world war two, again we saw the distortion of science as another gas was employed to eradicate certain ethnicities in what has become widely known as the gas chambers. We also saw the creation of bombs large enough to decimate entire cities and already there exists a myriad of chemical weapons all over the world that are intended to kill every living thing while leaving infrastructure intact. These are only a few examples of the magnitude of destruction that happens when new scientific technology falls into the wrong hands.

 

There are of course other discoveries that have led us to many improvements in our societies and surroundings. However, I am not so sure we are ready for this responsibility yet. We may have evolved intellectually, but we still have to many qualities that have a large impact on our ability to control our ever-growing power.

 

I hope for the best. "
