TRANSITIONS 2

The second installment in the Transitions mix series finds a strikingly similar line to Volume 1, with several characteristic edits and re-works that mish-mosh around some of the smoothest minimal and electro grooves around at the moment. (I suppose minimal with melody would be a proper description!) Two tracks from Abyss open the mix on a breathy, ambient note that will seem instantly familiar to those that purchased volume 1. The usage of semitones & crispy basslines deliver a groovy introduction that sets the stage perfectly for the rest of the album.

'I suppose minimal with melody would be a proper description!'

Antena's Camino del Sol pushes a quirky, moving synth in your face that works a slick tech-house groove, while William's The Shivering blends both hard & light moments in a heavy combination of electro & glitchy minimal. David K's Boul De Nerf kicks in a bit later with a massive twisting synth that plays around a delicious ethnic funk, while Felix Houzer's Mandolina plays its own brand of audible tricks with a booty-shaking 80's pop feel. Speaking of the 80's, Dose3 busts out the old Speak n' Spell with Tobi Neumann's remix of Minds, a monstrously kicking electro-banger that's chock full of dangerously techy melodies, while Jackmate's Manaray finishes out the mix on a peaking percussion-driven note that ends with a sweeping string/synth combo.

It was this utilization of minimal in this series that has raised eyebrows in certain circles, especially from those who are used to the banging prog/trance that John was known for back in the late 90's and early 2000's. Too many people have criticized him for 'going astray' from what was considered to be his normal sound, so I'll just finish by saying this: while it's true that fans sometimes dictate how a musician should sound, in the end it's nobody's responsibility but the artist themselves to either listen to what people want, or to go looking for different pastures.

When all is said and done, which do you think is more 'progressive': doing what was done 5 years ago because it's what's expected of you, or supporting a fresh new sound that's just starting to pick up new fans? Hmm...chin scratcher right there.
